December 7, 1993 - 5:33 PM - A packed commuter train leaves Penn Station in Manhattan for Long Island, marking the end of a typical workday for most. Yet, as the train crosses the border into Nassau County, a quiet trip home turns into a terrifying fight to stay alive. A lone gunman begins systematically shooting at commuters in car three, sparking a collective panic. Once the shooting commences, heroic passengers struggle to restrain the gunman, while others rush to assist the wounded and get help at Merillon Avenue station.

Thirteen months after the shooting, the accused gunman Colin Ferguson, is deemed sane and capable of standing trial. In the first of many twists to come, Ferguson boldly dismisses his lawyers and elects to defend himself. A total  43 witnesses testify during the next three weeks. After deliberating for more than 10 hours, the jury returns with a guilty verdict. MINUTE BY MINUTE: THE LONG ISLAND RAILROAD SHOOTING details the stories of the people who bravely fought against the madman who left six people dead and nineteen wounded, and the trial that sentenced the accused to six consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole..
